They're Repeating in America What They Performed to Christianity

Trumpism's most revealing and distinctive moments – not its most important, nor most brutal, nor most dangerous, nor stupidest, but possibly its most revealing – occurred earlier this fall. Over the span of several weeks, the American president commenced revealing all observers his plans for an ornate dance hall twice the size of the White House and then commenced unilaterally ripping down the East Wing portion to erect it.

He has done things 10,000 times as bad – the existing assessment of fatalities from his cuts to foreign assistance is 600,000 and rising, and presently an analysis projected his fossil fuel policies would result in fatalities an additional 1.3 million. Yet nothing as characteristic. No previous president would have risked – truly, no other president would have imagined – solo demolishing large sections of the presidential residence in order to erect a palace-inspired entertainment space, with the direct cooperation of multiple America's wealthiest, nearly all of which maintain dealings with public institutions.

We moved from 'the humble will receive the world' to 'the humble will perish from cholera'

As bewildering as it is to witness the leader try to upend the traditional concept about democracy and exchange it with its complete opposite, there is one large group among Americans who wouldn't consider it entirely new. This includes individuals like us – among senior generations close to half – who were raised within mainstream Protestant traditions.

We have witnessed over the years as politically conservative religious groups converted the Savior we learned about into the complete reverse of our perception of his character. At its most basic, they turned a figure of love into a figure of hate who endorses precisely the cruelties that he condemned in scripture; this transformation occurred at a slower pace, through multiple decades as opposed to months, but it is nonetheless unsettling via comparable methods, a bewildering emotional blow for many of us.

A Harmful Christianity Gains Ground

Hence I shall explain the Savior from my upbringing, as conceptually the Savior is the core of Christian religion, and since the rapidly expanding group among Americans may possess limited understanding about him since they are atheists or doubters or religiously unaffiliated. I raise no objection with these different approaches, nor with alternative spiritual paths; yet I maintain that there are pearls of great price in biblical accounts.

It is unquestionably not the narrative of a powerful ruler emerging; rather, a baby is born to displaced parents in an automotive shelter, who need to rapidly escape to a different country to evade secret police. The child matures in modest conditions, a laboring woodworker; his message focuses on affection for fellow humans, specifically for the impoverished – and not a sentimental love, but a concrete one, expressed by feeding and housing. Jesus' answer to aggression is to present the additional cheek – not as a demonstration of passive acceptance, but as a way to instruct the attacker; his crime policy indicates that whenever a person pilfers your jacket you must offer the person your additional clothing also.

The obvious and direct reality that the Savior of the gospels requests a kind of extreme compassion concentrated on the poor is what has always made Christianity rather a scandalous religion: appealing to the masses, but because of its inherent radicalness requiring to be controlled. During the 1950s it was controlled by dilution – Protestant Christianity was so prevalent that it practically sanctified existing conditions.

A Conflict for the Highest Within Us

Therefore I have felt encouraged to see the determined opposition to Trump emerge in this past year. It has provided great solace to assist in constructing the campaign that has demonstrated publicly via continuous gatherings, and appears to have motivated electorate to participate in significant amounts in the off-year elections. We will need to continue it, and in the same spirit, featuring US banners throughout each rally and appeals to the highest qualities of American history.

We will be questioned ... regarding how you welcomed the stranger? Did you welcome them and welcome him or not?

The nation is most protected, essentially, by reference to the best in US heritage, exactly as the Christian faith is best defended by reference to elements that cause it to be unique and wonderful, which is the example of the Savior. In neither case does it mean acting as if the worst regarding America and Christianity never occurred; it means both humility and faith, a mixture that committed US believers should embrace.
