Seven alleged individuals of Germany's far-left group stand trial over series of violent incidents

A group of seven people accused of being the left-wing extremist organization Antifa Ost went on trial on this week, facing charges for attacks targeting far-right activists that resulted in the moniker “Hammer Gang”.

Global terror listing and legal charges

Earlier this month, the United States designated Antifa Ost as a terrorist organization together with multiple additional European far-left and anarchist networks.

German prosecutors state the network was responsible for targeting sites in Germany and Hungary between 2018 and 2023. Included in the allegations is the multiple attacks of a business proprietor in central Thuringia, whose venue was known as a gathering spot for rightwing activists.

Some suspects are said to have employing hammers against presumed rightwing extremists, leaving some with serious injuries.

Court proceedings and international connections

Court proceedings involving seven defendants is expected to run until July 2026 in the city of Dresden. Two defendants, named as Johann G. and Paul M., also face charges for violent incidents in Budapest during early 2023, coinciding with an yearly gathering called the “day of honour” that attracts rightwing extremists from across Europe.

In a related case, another German activist, Maja T., is facing trial in Hungary for four counts of attempted violent acts against far-right activists in the lead-up to the same rally in 2023.

Historical background and organizational structure

Eastern Germany has long been a hotbed for both right-wing extremist and anti-immigrant youth groups, as well as the often militant antifascist groups that counter them.

Authorities characterize Johann G. as a high-ranking member within the organization, tasked with planning attacks and bringing in new members.

Alongside Paul M, he is alleged to have arranged instruction courses where radical left activists practised combat techniques and rehearsed attacks. At depots managed by the suspect, the group allegedly accumulated hammers, pepper spray, concealment items and communication devices.

Previous convictions and global responses

Another militant formerly involved with the group, Lina E., emerged as a symbolic figure within certain radical left communities following her 2023 guilty verdict for attacks on presumed far-right targets.

The US designation makes group members ineligible to enter the US, freezes any assets they may have within the world’s largest economy and criminalizes providing material support to them.

The German right-wing Alternative for Germany applauded the US decision and called on the government in Berlin to take similar action. However, the country's diplomatic office merely commented it had “acknowledged” of the American classification.

“The danger posed by the organization has recently decreased significantly. The ringleaders and particularly violent members have received convictions or are in custody.”
