Nepal's Political Scene Sees Significant Partnership Formed Between Media Personality and Former Musician Mayor

In a significant move ahead of the upcoming general election, a pair of high-profile personalities in Nepali politics have joined forces. This alliance emerges in the wake of large-scale and deadly young people's protests that rocked the country earlier this year and eventually led to the ouster of the sitting government.

A Commitment to Tackle Young People's Demands

Media figure Rabi Lamichhane, who heads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a one-time rapper, have officially pledged to focus on the grievances raised by the new generation. This commitment comes after the turbulent anti-corruption unrest that took place in September, which resulted in considerable loss of life.

"Agreement must not be as the leader seeks, it should be what the nation requires," stated Lamichhane following the deal was signed.

The late summer uprising was sparked by public frustration over a short-lived government ban on social media platforms. This incident acted as a spark for deeper discontent stemming from a long period of economic stagnation and persistent allegations of deep-rooted political corruption.

Terms of the Fresh Political Partnership

According to the formal pact, the positions for the imminent election have been defined. Rabi Lamichhane will remain as the chairperson of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the party's candidate for the role of prime minister in the election set for 5 March.

  • Rabi Lamichhane: A well-known 51-year-old television personality, he established the RSP in 2022, capturing widespread discontent with the nation's established political class. He has in the past served in the posts of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was not long ago freed on bail in a case related to reported cooperative fraud and organized crime.
  • Balendra Shah (Balen): The thirty-five-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is viewed as a key figure in Nepal's ongoing political shift. He played a role in setting up the interim government that took over after the previous administration was dissolved.

Wider Government Consultations Underway

In a separate development, the current interim prime minister over the weekend conducted consultations with a number of leading political leaders. These discussions included ex- prime ministers and the presidents of rival mainstream parties, marking the first such gathering since the time of the uprising.

After these meetings, the prime minister posted on social media to emphasize that holding a credible election is a collective duty. The statement reiterated the government's commitment to ensuring a safe and open atmosphere for the polls, noting that efforts are being made to remove any room for doubt.
