British Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have conducted a mission with France's air force in a combined operation on an hidden munitions depot in Syrian territory operated by the Daesh militant organization, according to the UK Ministry of Defence.
The facility, located using surveillance, was assessed as containing munitions and bombs, the announcement noted, and was situated in mountains just to the north of Palmyra in central Syria.
"Our fighter planes used precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to hit a series of access tunnels down to the facility... preliminary assessments are that the target was engaged successfully," officials stated.
There was no indication of any civilian impact in the strike on Saturday evening and each participating jet made a safe return, the ministry further stated.
The Typhoon fighters were supported by a Voyager tanker plane.
Daesh - alternatively referred to as Daesh - enforced extremist governance over large swathes of Syria and Iraq until 2019.
"This strike shows our UK leadership, and resolve to work closely with allied nations, to stamp out any resurgence of Daesh and their violent and radical beliefs in the area," UK Defence Secretary the Defence Secretary said.
British military aircraft have conducted surveillance missions over Syria to "deter any attempted resurgence" of IS following its routing at the climactic battle in Baghuz in 2019, the MoD reported.
"I want to thank all the members of British forces who took part in this mission for their skill and their valour," the Defence Secretary said. "Including them were thousands of UK service members deployed over the holidays. This operation, to remove terrorist threats who endanger our security, shows how British military are ready to step up, throughout the year, ensuring Britain's security within its borders and strong abroad."
In December, the US military conducted what it called a "massive strike" targeting Daesh sites in Syria, subsequent to an attack claimed the lives of two US troops and a civilian linguist in Palmyra.
The U.N. says Daesh still boasts roughly 5-7 thousand combatants in Iraq and Syria.
