Australia's captain Expected to Feature a Major Role in Ashes Series

Test match action

The Australian skipper has taken 309 Test scalps in 71 Test matches with an stellar bowling average.

The Australian selection chief Bailey has declared that pace spearhead Cummins will be a central figure in the forthcoming England-Australia contest.

Rumors had circulated that Cummins might miss the series due to a stress fracture in his back that had not yet healed.

Earlier indications from the Australian camp suggested no final decision had been made regarding Cummins' participation, with the five-Test series scheduled to begin on the 21st of November in Perth.

The selector shared that Cummins is "building up" and remained hopeful about the likelihood of being involved.

"We know that the clock is ticking and multiple considerations at play, not just the physical problem, but additional elements," he commented.

"We're encouraged. There's strong faith that he's going to play a major part. With luck from the opening match. Should that not happen, then we'll pick it up."

Previous Setbacks

The captain missed the white-ball matches against India and New Zealand recently after medical tests showed a stress reaction in his back.

Previous incidents include of back injuries, with recurrences in several earlier campaigns forcing him out of three Australian summers in a limited period.

Cummins stated he would be proactive in his approach in his comeback strategy to ensure his availability for the series.

Bailey noted that there was no confirmation if Cummins had begun bowling as part of his recovery but admitted it was "getting tight" for him to recover fully for the first Test.

Contingency Plans

If he's unavailable, ex-skipper Smith will lead the side.

Versatile player Green was recently pulled out from Australia's squad for their one-day international series against India as a precautionary measure because of discomfort in his torso.

The selector characterized it as a "slight concern and mentioned that he's scheduled to appear in the Sheffield Shield, so will be "well-prepared to resume bowling."

"Considerable effort has gone into developing the strategy for him to participate for the first Test as an batting and bowling option," Bailey explained.

"His involvement was limited to the starting games in any case. The way he swings the cricket bat in white-ball cricket, even if it just sets him back for 24 more hours, we just made the decision to approach this more conservatively."
